6 Degrees of Separation

You know what is a weird thing?

The need to feel connected to others in the most insignificant way.

A little while ago I found out that someone who I attended high school with is on his way to becoming a very successful film maker. I doubt he knows me, and I only know of him by reputation. He was an up and comer when I was making my departure from high school so we never really crossed paths.

Anyways, today while doing the inevitable "googling" that comes along when you hear that someone younger and more talented then you is also more successful, I connected the dots to realise that his writing partner is also the brother of a person who I worked with years ago.

I confirmed this via some facebook stalking and its all true. The first thing I wanted to do was message her and say "Hey your brother's writing partner is a guy I kinda went to high school with". I was so excited to have that connection...IF I had posted that to her wall, where would the conversation go from there? "oh, neat". Even after analysing this I still kinda want to let her know. It's totally weird.

What do we get out of knowing that you and Joe Shmo have 75 mutual friends. I am not quite sure, but I think we all can agree that we want to expose those connections. Have you ever had this conversation:

" I don't want to sound like a facebook stalker, but I see your friends with Steve Jones, how do you know him?"

In other news, I still haven't found my blog niche...

What to write...

Successful blogs have some sort of theme or specialty I find. I just need to find mine. People always say write what you know, but what if what you know is the same as other people know or worse what if what you know is boring and doesn't interest anyone else? Like a classic "you had to be there" story. One you tell to someone even though you are pretty certain that they won't find it nearly as amusing but there is some small shred of you that the story might be worth it. Halfway through you usually find yourself wishing that you hadn't started the story. There are 3 ways out.

1. Finish the story- Maybe if you are lucky the listener will give you a pitty laugh. Even if you know it's a pitty laugh at least you have learned you shouldn't tell that story to another soul.

2. Bail halfway through- Depending on your audience they might full well understand, and downright appreciate you backing out. ESPECIALLY if you are good friends and they can't take another story about that thing that the friend of a co-worker did. Why are you even telling that story? Chances are you don't remember all the details and it's not your story!

3.Embelish the story to make it more interesting- Caution this is dangerous territory. I have to say, outside of a job interview scenario, that I have only been on the recieving end of this. It's too scary to start mixing stories of what actually happened and adding something that you know you saw on a sitcom once and it was really funny. People know. They won't say that they know, but they know.

Anyways, the moral of my story is that I am on a quest to find my blog specialty. I like to think it will be a mix bag. Life, arts and culture (aka tv reviews), work... and anything else I find neccesary to talk about. No pressure.

If you "have to be there" to enjoy some of my stories so be it.

Have I ever told you about the time I was on my way home from work on the usual bloor danforth subway train and Denzel Washington saved all the commuters from Danny Zuko... or wait was it Tony Manero?

Every Now and Then...

Every now and then, I start thinking I have something important, unique, and possibly humerous to say. It usually leads to me thinking about starting a blog. The last blog I created was about planning a wedding. Don't get me wrong, it was not a girly thing to do. I wanted to create a blog for those who have not grown up planning there own wedding and talk about the challenges of planning the most extravagant celebration of your life on a budget and getting what you want. Four or five posts later the blog died.

We shall see the fate of this blog...
